Tokyo stocks retreated Monday morning following Wall Street's closing low at the end of last week, but losses were trimmed as the yen's retreat versus the U.S. dollar triggered buybacks.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged down 29.01 points, or 0.17 percent, from Friday to 16,790.58.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, shed 2.75 points, or 0.20 percent, to end the morning at 1,366.22.

Notable decliners by the morning break comprised glass and ceramics products, nonferrous metals, and shares linked to oil and coal products. Endit
