Al-Qa'ida in the Islamic Maghreb (Aqim) affiliated group Al-Mourabitoune has released Jocelyn Elliott, his wife Ken Elliott, both Australians kidnapped last January 15 in northern Burkina Faso, security source said.

The release occurred hours after the jihadist group claimed in audio recording the kidnapping of the Australian couple and announced unconditional upcoming release.

According to security source, Jocelyn Elliott was placed under the protection of Niger republic authorities after her abduction.

The kidnapping occurred the day when terrorist attack was perpetrated on Splendid Hotel and on a restaurant.

The attack killed about 30 people in down-town Ouagadougou, the capital city of the West African country.

The Australian couple have been living since 1972 in Djibo locality, close to Baraboule, where it provides medical care to local populations.

The kidnapping stirred up strong emotion in the northern region, one of the poorest areas of Burkina Faso, bordering Mali and Niger. Endit
