Palestinian factions call on Hamas, Fatah to end internal split

Xinhua, February 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

Palestinian factions called on President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah Party and the Islamic Hamas movement to resolve and end their internal split in their dialogue in Qatar on Sunday.

Six Palestinian factions, including the Popular Front, Islamic Jihad and the Arab Liberation Front, said "this time, there is no place for failure amongst rivals in reaching an agreement to end the current grim Palestinian situation."

"The situation is currently unbearable as people's suffering has increased due to the ongoing Israeli siege, blockade and Zionist proceedings in both the West Bank and Jerusalem," said a statement.

Leaders of Fatah and Hamas are meeting Sunday in Doha to discuss implementing their previous agreements reached in Cairo and Doha in the past few years.

Azzam el-Ahmaed, head of the Fatah delegation, is expected to hold talks with a senior Hamas delegation headed by the Hamas chief, Khaled Meshaal.

Official sources said both sides will discuss establishing a broader unity government and holding general presidential and legislative elections.

"Both sides must agree on implementing all outstanding issues through practical, clear and direct binding means in accordance with the Cairo agreement in 2011," said the factions' statement.

The factions also requested that both Fatah and Hamas refrain from monopolizing the dialogue which should include all political powers and factions. Endit
