Some four local Taliban insurgent leaders had been killed in different military operations in Afghanistan, officials said on Sunday.
"On Sunday morning, Afghan National Police (ANP) carried out a special operation in Nirkh district, eastern Wardak province, killing a Taliban commander named Abdul Wahid. The ANP also killed a Taliban local commander named Baryali and one of his bodyguards in the same district on Saturday night," the Afghan Interior Ministry said in a statement.
In addition, two Taliban intelligence members named Qari Abdul Bashir and Hajji Khalid were killed during a special operation launched by Afghan security forces in Dand-e-Ghori District, northern Baghlan province on Saturday, a provincial security official told Xinhua earlier on the day.
Afghan security forces have pressed on clearing the militants in restive provinces as Taliban militants have been attempting to take territory and consolidate their positions during the winter in the Central Asian country.
The militant group has yet to make comments.
In an unrelated incident, three civilians were shot dead by gunmen in the country's Ghazi Abad district of eastern province of Kunar on Saturday, a district police official Ahmad Shah told Xinhua earlier on Sunday.
The victims were kidnapped by the gunmen during an anti-polio campaign earlier this month, he said.
However, the provincial health officials, citing initial probes, stated that the killed were not targeted for taking part in the polio campaign but the motive behind the attack may have been some personal disputes. Enditem
