British driver Sam Bird wins Formula E race in Buenos Aires

British driver Sam Bird dominated virtually from start to finish during the fourth race of the Formula E season, held Saturday in Buenos Aires, in front of a large crowd at the Puerto Madero circuit.

The winner put on a dominating performance, only briefly giving first place during a stop to recharge his battery.

Switzerland's Sebastien Buemi finished second and Brazil's Lucas di Grassi finished third. Buemi's high finish behind Bird was all the more impressive as he began the race in 18th position after spinning off the track in qualifying.

This was just the second Formula E event ever held in Argentina after it made its debut in the country in 2015.

"The race was incredible," said Buemi at the press conference, while admitting he had suffered a problem with his battery's temperature and had to settle for second place.

Bird, who began the race in pole position, recognized it had been a tough race, during which he had to fend off attacks from his rivals Buemi and Di Grassi.

Formula E began in 2014 in Beijing after having its prototype tested in 2013. All cars competing are electric, equipped with Renault engines, and powered by 300-kilo lithium batteries.

The sport has brought in the sons of past Formula 1 stars, Nelson Piquet, Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, who all currently compete. Enditem
