EU foreign affairs chief to visit Iran

Xinhua, February 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

European Union (EU) foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini said Saturday she planned to visit Iran after international sanctions on the country were lifted following the implementation of a landmark nuclear deal.

"We are intensively preparing with the Iranians. " Mogherini said here after an informal meeting of EU foreign affairs council, during which she updated the EU ministers on the progress of the talks with Iran.

Iran and world powers reached an agreement in July last year. According to the deal, sanctions imposed by the United States, European Union and United Nations will be lifted in return for Iran agreeing long-term curbs on a nuclear program. Implementation of this agreement started on January 16.

According to Mogherini, preparations were already underway although the date of her visit was not fixed yet.

She is expected to talk to Iranian leaders about economic issues including energy and trade.

Apart from promoting relations between Iran and EU, the diplomat's discussions with Iranian leaders would extend to issues concerning immigration and the effort to contain tensions in the region, according to Mogherini.

Mogherini said she would host Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Brussels for a two-day visit on February 15-16. Enditem
