Peruvian authorities reported a new outbreak of dengue on Thursday, with 64 confirmed cases found in the northern region of Piura.
There were also 193 suspected cases in the outbreak, said Piura's health director, Jesus Juarex Eyzaguirre. The outbreak came on the heels of a health alert concerning the Zika virus along Peru's border with Ecuador.
The first case of Zika in Peru was found last week. However, this case concerned a Venezuelan national who had travelled to the area after visiting Colombia.
No cases of Zika virus have been found to have originated within Peru, according to Eyzaguirre.
Nevertheless, the outbreak of dengue in Piura, on the northern edge of the country, forced authorities to redouble the preventive efforts to fight the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which carries Zika, dengue and chikungunya.
Peru's Health Ministry declared a green alert on Tuesday in all the country's hospitals and health centers in order to eliminate the breeding grounds of the mosquito.
Across the country, authorities have been cleaning streets, carrying out mass fumigation campaigns and emptying ponds and water takes to prevent the Aedes aegypti from reproducing. Endit
