Germany funds ammunition destruction project in BiH

Xinhua, February 5, 2016 Adjust font size:

Germany will contribute 250,000 euros (280,000 U.S. dollars) to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) for the destruction of surplus weapons and ammunition, local media reported on Thursday.

The money will fund the second phase of the project EXPLODE, or "Urgent Action on Ammunition Destruction and Bosnia and Herzegovina."

Some five million rounds of ammunition and weapons will be destroyed, the report said, adding the money will also be used in a training program.

Due to the 1990s war, BiH has a large stock of excess weapons and ammunition. In the past seven to 10 years, some 12,000 tons of surplus weapons were destroyed in BiH together with some 150,000 pieces of arms.

There are still around 16,000 tons of landmines and explosive ordnance as well as 40,000 pieces of various weapons. Endit
