Reconstruction Authority proposes another Donors' Conference in Nepal

Xinhua, February 4, 2016 Adjust font size:

The National Reconstruction Authority (NRA), the authoritative body to carry out quake-ravaged Nepal's rebuilding, has proposed to hold a second International Donors' Conference.

During a meeting with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and cabinet ministers on Wednesday, NRA made such proposal to raise additional funds for reconstruction of the country that witnessed a massive earthquake on April 25 last year.

Stating that the financial assistance of 4.1 billion U.S. dollars pledged by the donor community on International Conference on Nepal's Reconstruction held on June 25 last year is insufficient, NRA's newly appointed Chief Executive Officer Sushil Gywalai floated such proposal, according to local media reports.

According to the Post Disaster Needs Assessment report, conducted after the quake that killed nearly 9,000 people and made more than a half million homeless, Nepal needs around 7 billion dollars to restore the damaged infrastructures.

The proposal of NRA comes at a time when the Nepali government has been failing to provide necessary relief to the quake victims of 14 worst-hit districts.

Though reconstruction campaign was formally inaugurated by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Jan. 16, the National Reconstruction Authority has not come up with a planning of reconstruction and rehabilitation yet. Enditem
