Copenhagen mayor Frank Jensen has proposed that the Danish capital should divest from fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal, according to a statement issued on Wednesday.
"Copenhagen is one of the world's greenest cities, and we are racing to become the first carbon-dioxide-neutral capital city," Jensen was quoted as saying in the statement.
"We find it completely inappropriate that the city still has investments in the oil, coal and gas industries," said the Social Democrat mayor.
On Tuesday, members of the Copenhagen City Council's Finance Committee made a commitment to avoid making investments in firms whose primary activity is the production of oil, coal and gas.
The city will now seek to develop an investment strategy that excludes firms whose primary activity is the production of non-renewable energy, according to the statement.
"I believe this is in line with the wishes of many Copenhagen residents that we become a greener city," Jensen said.
Oslo became the first capital city to divest from fossil fuels last year, while Newcastle in Australia has also made a divestment commitment.
Copenhagen has previously set a goal to become the world's first CO2 neutral capital by 2025. Endit
