UN releases 8 mln USD to help most vulnerable people in DPRK

Xinhua, February 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

The United Nations has released 8 million U.S. dollars for severely under-funded aid operations in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), said a UN spokesman on Tuesday.

The UN Resident Coordinator, Tapan Mishra, has said that humanitarian needs must be kept separate from political issues to ensure minimum living conditions for the most vulnerable people, spokesamn Farhan Haq said at a press briefing.

The commitment and support of the international community is vital, Mishra was quote by Haq as saying.

The fund from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) will help provide life-saving assistance for more than 2.2 million people who are the most vulnerable and at risk of malnutrition, said Haq.

The DPRK was one of nine countries to receive such grants within the overall 100 million U.S. dollars allocation to underfunded emergencies, according to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

CERF funds will be used to sustain critical life-saving interventions aimed at improving the nutrition situation in the country through reduction of maternal and under-five child mortality and morbidity, OCHA said. Enditem
