UN Security Council slams "horrific" attacks by Boko Haram in Nigeria

Xinhua, February 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

The UN Security Council on Tuesday condemned in the strongest terms the "horrific" terrorist attacks on Jan. 30 attributed to Boko Haram in northeastern Nigeria, said a press statement of the council.

Dozens of homes in Dalori village were burned to the ground. A suicide bomber infiltrated the ranks of people seeking refuge under a tree and ignited the bomb, causing up to 85 casualties.

The members of the Security Council expressed their deep condolences and sympathy to the families and friends of those killed and injured by these heinous acts, as well as to the people and the Government of Nigeria.

The council commended the efforts of the region, including through the Multi-National Joint Task Force, to effectively combat Boko Haram and encouraged further progress in this regard.

The 15-member body reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.

The council underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice.

On Tuesday, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) said it destroyed a logistics base used by Boko Haram militants in their Sambisa forest hideout, northeast Nigeria.

Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, is currently feeling the heat of terrorism by Boko Haram. The terror group, which has spread its tentacles to neighboring countries including Cameroon, Chad and Niger, has abducted thousands of people and killed more since 2009. Enditem
