A former executive at the Brazilian oil giant Petrobras was sentenced to 12 years in jail for corruption and money laundering.
Federal Judge Sergio Moro, who has been overseeing the trials of former company executives accused of kickbacks and other crimes, announced the verdict on Monday.
Jorge Zelada, the former director of the company's international division, was accused of taking 31 million U.S. dollars in bribes from Vantage Drilling Corporation in exchange for granting the company a contract to carry out sonic studies.
Zelada headed his division from 2008 to 2012, replacing Nestor Cervero, who is also in jail, along with dozens of former Petrobras executives.
Moro also convicted Zelada of laundering more than 11.5 million euros (12.5 million dollars) through secret bank accounts at several offshore tax havens, and Brazilian courts have already confiscated some 30.7 million dollars from Zelada's offshore accounts.
Petrobras manager Eduardo Costa was also sentenced to jail. Endi
