Two S. Africans sentenced for murdering Mozambican national

Xinhua, February 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday sentenced two South Africans to prison terms for murdering a Mozambican national during xenophobia attacks last year.

The court found Mthinta Bhengu and Sifundo Mzimela guilty for stabbing Emmuanuel Sithole to death and sentenced them to 17 years and 10 years respectively.

The third accused Ayanda Sibiya who turned 18 in January 2016 was convicted of theft and assault.

The death of Sithole, a Mozambican vendor, made international headlines during a flare-up of xenophobia attacks in parts of South Africa last April. Photographs of a bleeding Sithole pleading for life in the mud sparked condemnation at home and abroad.

The attack, which happened in Johannesburg's Alexandra township, was captured by a Sunday Times reporter and published on the newspaper's front page.

Several other people were also killed and thousands of foreigners displaced during the violence. Enditem
