Philippine president names acting economic planning chief

Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III has formally appointed Dr. Emmanuel Esguerra as Acting Socio-Economic Planning Secretary and Acting Director- General of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), a senior government official said Monday.

Esguerra replaced Arsenio Balisacan, who was recently appointed as chairperson of the Philippine Competition Commission, said Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said.

Esguerra was a deputy director-general of the NEDA and headed the National Development Office for Policy and Planning.

He was an associate professor at the University of the Philippines School of Economics, where he was also chair of the economics department prior to his appointment to NEDA in July 2012. Endit
