Official results of Vanuatu's snap election out

Xinhua, February 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

Vanuatu's Electoral Commission has released the official results of the Pacific island country's snap election held over a week ago, local media reported Monday.

According to local news website Vanuatu Daily Digest, there are a total of 17 political parties in the new unicameral 52-seat parliament, including caretaker Prime Minister Sato Kilman's People's Progress Party.

Of the 52 members of parliament, eight are independent candidates.

The new parliament is expected to have its first sitting next week, where MPs will vote to elect a new prime minister.

Vanuatu decided to hold the snap election, which was held on Jan. 22, after its parliament was dissolved in November last year, which followed sentencings made against 15 MPs convicted of bribery.

A number of veteran MPs are no longer in the new parliament. Enditem
