Woman from Myanmar arrested for drug trafficking

Xinhua, January 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

A Chinese man and a pregnant woman from Myanmar have been arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking in southwest China's Yunnan Province, local police announced on Friday.

Police found 10.35 kg of heroin in the 20-year-old woman's backpack when they arrested her with a 28-year-old man surnamed Zhao in a hotel in provincial capital Kunming on Dec. 23.

The woman told the police that a man from Myanmar asked her to carry the drugs, promising to pay her more than 1,000 yuan (153 U.S. dollars). Zhao said the man gave him 10,000 yuan and asked him to book a room for the trafficker and deliver the drugs to him in Kunming.

Under a Chinese law commonly exploited by drug traffickers, pregnant or breastfeeding women may post bail instead of serving a jail sentence. Endi
