Jordan says expects positive outcome from Syria donors conference

Xinhua, January 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

Jordan said Thursday it anticipates positive outcomes from a Syria donors conference scheduled for next month in London, state-run Petra news agency reported.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour said Jordan's main concern is the reduction of pressure on the kingdom's institutions from the increased influx of Syrian refugees.

Jordan, with a population of 8 million, which includes an estimated 1.9 Palestinian refugees, now hosts an additional 1.4 million refugees from neighboring Syria.

The 2016 Syria Donors Conference is "crucial and we expect the international community and the European Union (EU) in particular to support Jordan in addressing the challenges posed by the pressure exacted on state institutions by Syrian refugees," Ensour told EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn.

Hahn, visiting Jordan during a regional tour, commended Jordan's efforts in hosting Syrian refugees, stressing that Jordan's cohesion and security is crucial for the region's overall stability.

Ensour said the mounting inflow of Syrian refugees has posed direct and indirect challenges in terms of energy, security, health and educational services.

He vowed to continue Jordan's fight against terrorist groups , defend the image of Islam, and promote peace and security in the Middle East, Petra said. Endit
