Xinhua, January 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

Speaker of the House of Representative (Lower House) of Myanmar's parliament U Shwe Mann Thursday urged the parliament to promulgate just law in order to ensure effectiveness of rule of law, parliament sources said.

"Only when just law that can be followed by the people is enacted, can genuine change take place and rule of law be effective," U Shwe Mann told the House in his farewell speech at the last session of the current parliament, as he called on fellow outgoing MPs to cooperate and work outside the parliament for the success of the new parliament.

U Shwe Mann of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), became speaker of the union parliament and the House of Representatives after being elected as a representative to the House in the 2010 general election.

The last session of the two Houses of the current term of the parliament ended in Nay Pyi Taw on Thursday.

With a majority of new parliamentarians from the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD), the first session of the two Houses of the newly-elected parliament are due to start on next Monday.

The current term of the government will also expire on March 30 and a new government will take office on the day in accordance with the result of the Nov. 8 general election in 2015.

On Thursday, the NLD nominated two elected parliament representatives to act as new speakers of the two Houses of the next term of the parliament with U Win Myint as speaker of the House of Representatives (Lower House) and U Mann Win Khaing Than as speaker of the House of Nationalities (Upper House).
