Paralympics Namibia hope to beef up squad ahead of Rio 2016

The Namibian Paralympic Team has started preparations towards the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games and so far athletes who have achieved Minimum Qualification Standard (AQS and BQS) for the games include 10 athletes and one power lifter.

Brazil will approximately host 4,350 athletes from 176 countries and regions during the games which will kick off on Sept. 7 in Rio de Janeiro,

Public Relations officer at the Namibia's National Paralympic Committee, Memory Kahlari, said on Thursday that the Namibian squad has still potential to grow as participants, still have a chance to qualify at the 2016 Nedbank South African Sports Association for Physically Disabled (SASAPD) Track & Field Athletics Championships slated for March in South Africa, since the qualifying period will end on Apr. 1.

"We are still having hope in our swimmers to qualify for the games as well," she added.

In regards to funding Kahlari said that the committee can confirm that the Namibian government will definitely avail resources for the team to represent the nation in Rio and hopes that corporate company's will also come on board. Enditem
