Indian police book southern state's chief minister in solar scam

Xinhua, January 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

Indian police on Thursday booked Chief Minister of the southern state of Kerala Oommen Chandy in connection with a scam related to solar panels.

The chief minister was booked after a court ordered the police to file a case against him in the solar scam after the main accused, Saritha Nair, claimed that she paid money to Chandy's aides.

The scam pertains to collecting millions of rupees from industrialists by the main accused after promising them solar panels at cheaper rates.

Though the chief minister has denied any wrongdoing and even deposed before a judicial commission claiming his innocence, opposition parties have demanded his resignation.

Chandy, who belongs to the state's ruling Congress party, has even accused the main opposition Left parties and Kerala's liquor lobby for targetting him, barely three months before the assembly polls.

Kerala goes to polls in April this year and the police case against the chief minister in the solar scam has come as a huge blow for the Congress party which lost power in India in 2014 for corruption. Endit
