Myanmar opposition party forms parliamentary affairs leading committee

Xinhua, January 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

Myanmar's election winning opposition party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), has formed a five-member Parliamentary Affairs Leading Committee with its senior party members.

The committee will be led by U Win Htein and its members include U Mann Win Khaing Than, U Min Oo, Daw Khin San Hlaing and U Aung Soe, said an announcement of the NLD signed by its chairperson Aung San Suu Kyi Wednesday.

The formation of the committee came a day ahead of the end of the last session of the current term of the parliament on Thursday when President U Thein Sein is expected to give a speech.

The current term of the parliament is to expire on Jan. 30 and the newly elected parliament is due to start its first sessions of two Houses -- House of Representatives (Lower House) and House of Nationalities (Upper House) next Monday.

NLD won the absolute majority of the parliamentary seats in Nov. 8, 2015 general election.

As winning the absolute majority of the parliamentary seats in the election, the NLD will nominate two new speakers and two deputy speakers of the two Houses, followed by election of the country's president and two vice presidents and then the president will form a new government according to parliamentary process.

Meanwhile, Suu Kyi and military chief Senior-General Min Aung Hlaing on Monday had discussions on formation of the new government among a series of matters dealing with post-election transition, peace and tranquility. Endit
