The ongoing 12th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) on Tuesday elected its new party central committee with 200 members.

The 200 members of the newly-elected CPV Central Committee (CPVCC) include 180 official and 20 alternate ones. Nguyen Phu Trong, general secretary of the 11th CPVCC was among the 200 people elected.

The election was held during the ongoing 12th National Congress of the CPV being held in Vietnam's capital Hanoi from Jan. 21-28. The 200 CPVCC members were elected from a total of 246 nominated.

Current Minister of Public Security Tran Dai Quang (1956), Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc (1954) and Vice Chairwoman of Vietnam's National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan (1954) are included in the list of new CPVCC.

Nguyen Phu Trong, born in 1944, has served as general secretary of the 11th CPVCC since 2011 and was nominated for re-election.

Tran Dai Quang was nominated to run for the position of Vietnamese president by the communist party, while Nguyen Xuan Phuc was nominated for the prime minister position, and Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan for chairwoman of Vietnam's National Assembly, said Vu Trong Kim, vice president and general secretary of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee.

Vu Trong Kim also informed local media on Sunday that Nguyen Phu Trong and other four people were nominated as "special cases" to the new CPVCC. The four people include Uong Chu Luu, vice chairman of the National Assembly; Do Ba Ty, deputy minister of defense; Bui Van Nam, deputy minister of public security; and Huynh Phong Tranh, government inspector general.

However, three of the four nominations were elected to the new CPVCC, while Huynh Phong Tranh is not elected, according to the 12th CPVCC name list issued by Vietnam's state-run news agency VNA.

The congress on Monday afternoon, by voting, allowed current President Truong Tan Sang, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, and Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Sinh Hung, among others, to withdraw from the list of nominations for election to the 12th CPVCC members.

As many as 1,510 delegates representing over 4.5 million Vietnamese communist party members are attending the 12th National Party Congress, which is scheduled to last till Thursday.

According to the agenda, after the election of the CPVCC, on Wednesday, the members of the 12th CPVCC will meet to elect a new Politburo, general secretary and secretariat of the 12th CPVCC.

The 12th National Party Congress will pave way for the election of the country's new leadership. Endit
