Republic of Congo's president endorsed as ruling party's candidate

Xinhua, January 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

The National Nomination Committee of Republic of Congo's ruling party, Congolese Labour Party (PCT), on Monday endorsed President Denis Sassou N'Guesso as its candidate in the March 20 presidential elections.

"After its fourth meeting that took place between Jan. 24 to 25, the PCT nomination committee settled on Sassou N'Guesso as the party's candidate in the forthcoming elections," said a statement read before the party's supporters in Brazzaville.

"The party's Central Committee unanimously supported this choice and asked President Sassou N'Guesso to contest, and the committee reassured him of its support," it added.

PCT secretary general Pierre Ngollo said the party had made "the right choice by endorsing Sassou N'Guesso, an experienced man who brought peace to the country and works hard for its development."

Ngollo urged PCT supporters to financially support campaigns for the re-election of the incumbent president.

The latter has not yet declared his decision on whether he will contest or not, although the new Constitution that was promulgated in November last year allows him to run for another term. Enditem
