Vagrants, beggars receive relief aid in cold weather

Xinhua, January 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

Public assistance departments across the country have been offering relief to the homeless since the beginning of November, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs on Monday.

Ministry spokesperson Chen Rifa said these organizations have distributed food, clothing and blankets, and helped to secure accommodation or provided train and bus tickets to those in need.

Even those who refused support will still be offered support and the door is always open should they need help, Chen said.

So far this winter, 90,000 homeless people have been taken off the streets and relocated to relief stations, Chen also said.

Schools and other outdoor activities have been suspended and emergency services are on standby after a wave of record cold front began last Thursday, bringing with it 30-year low temperatures in many regions. Endi
