UN Security Council slams Taliban attack on media workers

Xinhua, January 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

The UN Security Council on Thursday condemned the terrorist attack in the Afghan capital against a minibus transporting workers of a local media organization, for which the Taliban has claimed responsibility.

A suicide car bomb that targeted the bus killed at least eight people and wounded 27 others on Wednesday near the Russian Embassy in western Kabul. The bus was carrying employees of Tolo television channel, a popular television network in Afghanistan.

"The members of the Security Council strongly condemned the fact that this heinous crime, beyond attacking the lives of civilians, also aims at the right of all Afghans to freedom of expression," said a press statement released by the 15-nation council.

The Security Council expressed serious concern over the threats posed by the Taliban, Al-Qaida, the Islamic State affiliates to the local population.

"The members of the Security Council reiterated that no violent or terrorist acts can reverse the path towards Afghan-led peace, democracy and stability in Afghanistan," the statement said.

The blast came months after the Taliban militants declared some private TV channels as their "military objectives" for releasing what they called inaccurate reports. Endi
