World champion Xu Mengtao was injured in the women's freestyle

aerials competition of the Chinese National Winter Games here on Thursday.

Xu, the 2013 world championship winner and Sochi Olympics silver medalist, fell on her jump in the final while landing and could not stand up. She was taken away on a stretcher and sent to a local hospital for inspection.

"She suffered torn ligaments on her left knee," a doctor said after the initial examination.

Xu eventually earned 63.08 points for her jump and finished fifth in the event. Zhang Xin, who represents hosts Urumqi, claimed the title with 94.47 points.

The 13th National Winter Games opened here on Wednesday and will run through Jan. 30. It is for the first time since the winter sporting gala was introduced in 1959 that the quadrennial event has been held outside the northeastern provinces of Heilongjiang and Jilin. Endit
