Portuguese public employees salary to be fully restored by October

Xinhua, January 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Portuguese public sector employees salary will be fully restored to pre-crisis level by October this year with the initial increase starting from Wednesday, according to Portuguese Lusa News Agency.

The public employees will get a 25-percent salary increase each quarter until October this year when their salary will be restored to the pre-crisis level.

The previous center-right government cut public employees salary in 2011 amid a serious economic crisis in several decades but the government restored 20 percent in 2015 when the country's economy was slowly recovering.

The new Socialist government that took power in November has vowed to reverse the austerity measures including the pay cuts for public employees. The previous government had been implementing harsh austerity measures for the past few years under a 78-billion-euro bailout program Portugal signed in 2011 with its international creditors. Enditem
