Electrical short caused Dubai hotel fire: official

The cause of the fire at a luxurious Dubai hotel ahead of New Year fireworks is an electrical short, local daily Gulf News reported on Wednesday.

The blaze started in the cables of a spotlight on the ledge between the 14th and 15th floors of the 63-storey hotel, the report quoted Ahmad Mohammad Ahmad, head of forensic and mechanical engineering department of Dubai police.

Ahmad said that no arrest was made after the incident.

The fire broke out on Dec. 31 in Address Downtown Dubai Hotel where people were gathering nearby to watch the New Year's fireworks show. Some 14 people were lightly injured.

The images of the hotel engulfed by fire quickly hit the global headlines on New Year's eve. Endit
