Russia's Putin invited again to visit Bangkok: official

Xinhua, January 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

Thai leader Prayut Chan-o-cha has said Russian President Vladimir Putin will pay an official visit to Bangkok.

The Thai premier extended his invitation again for the Russian leader during Tuesday's meeting with Russian ambassador to Thailand Kirill Barsky at the Government House, deputy government spokesman Virachon Sukhonthapatipak said on Wednesday.

Prayut had earlier invited Putin for a trip to Bangkok through Russian Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev who paid an official visit to the Thai capital last April.

The Russian leader is yet to respond whether and when he might come as invited while the Thai premier would anticipate such a visit "at the first, suitable opportunity," according to the deputy government spokesman.

Apart from the Thai-Russian diplomatic relations, which are reaching the 120th anniversary this year, the two countries have agreed to expand and promote bilateral interests in trade, investment, military cooperation and tourism, he said.

However, the number of Russian visitors to the world-renowned beach resorts of Pattaya and Phuket, about 140 km east of Bangkok and about 860 km south of the capital respectively, has drastically dropped since the last few years due to devaluations of the ruble. Endit
