Possible snap elections in Serbia: PM

Xinhua, January 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said on Tuesday that the early parliamentary elections in Serbia could take place as soon as April 24, adding that he plans to continue with his work on country's reforms until then.

Attending the opening ceremony of the construction works on the new bridge across Sava River in Belgrade, Vucic said that it was "not unrealistic" that the elections he announced on Sunday would be held on April 24.

This way, parliamentary elections would take place at the same time as planned local elections as well as elections in Serbia's Northern Province of Vojvodina.

The final decision to call for snap elections will be brought by Serbian president Tomislav Nikolic once he receives such an official request from the government.

Vucic announced his plans to call for early elections at the meeting of the main board of the Serbian Progressive Party two days ago explaining that "government needs full stability and a full four-year mandate" to bring tough decisions and lead country to EU membership.

Vucic told journalists that he will return to the topic of elections in around 45 days, while in that time the government and the parliament will function regularly.

Current government of Serbia was elected on April 27, 2014 by a majority vote in the National Assembly. Previous parliamentary elections were held on March 16 in that same year. Enditem
