Spanish Socialists unwilling to take part in gov't formation talks, says Rajoy

Xinhua, January 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

Acting Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Monday said he has not talked with Pedro Sanchez, the leader of the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE), regarding possible collaboration to form a government as they have not wanted to talk to him.

Addressing Spanish state radio RNE, Rajoy said: "Sanchez does not want to negotiate with me."

The inconclusive December 20 general election results left his PP party with 123 seats in a congress, falling short of the 175 seats needed for a majority. The PSOE obtained 90 seats.

Rajoy added there was "still a large margin for an agreement with the PSOE and center-right party Citizens" because the three parties shared the same ideas regarding the unity of Spain, national sovereignty and the European Union.

Rajoy said he would continue working to form a "coherent" government with an "ample base and ample support."

Monday also sees King Felipe VI of Spain begin a series of meetings with all political parties in congress to facilitate the formation of a coalition government. Endit
