Nepal may press AIIB for benefit of least developed countries: experts

Nepalese economic experts say Nepal may influence the policies of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) as a board member of for the needs of the least developed countries (LDCs).

Nepal, one of the founding members of the China-initiated bank, was selected as one of the board members

Jagadish Chandra Pokharel, former vice-chairman of the National Planning Commission (NPC), said becoming the board member of the bank was an opportunity for Nepal to influence the policies of the bank to benefit the LDCs.

"Beside influencing the policy in favor of LDCs, Nepal can take more benefit from the bank if the country can influence the policy of the bank for the benefit of land locked countries and mountainous countries," said the expert.

Economist Posh Raj Pandey also believes that Nepal, as a board member of the AIIB, could influence the policy of the bank to address the special needs and aspirations of Nepal.

Another Nepalese Economist Madan Kumar Dahal said the AIIB could contribute to Nepal's aspiration to become a developing country by 2022 and Middle Income Country by 2030. Enditem
