UN chief condemns terrorist attack against African Union base in Somalia

Xinhua, January 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

UN chief Ban Ki-moon on Friday condemned a terrorist attack perpetrated by Al Shabaab earlier in the day against a African Union base in Somalia, said a statement from Ban's spokesman.

It is reported that Al Shabaab fighters attacked an African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) base in the town of El Adde, Gedo region in southeastern Somalia on Friday, and killed dozens of Kenyan soldiers.

Commending the efforts of AMISOM troops working for peace in Somalia, Ban affirmed that "this attack will not diminish the resolve of the United Nations to work hand in hand with the African Union and AMISOM to support the people and Government of Somalia," the statement said.

The UN Security Council on Friday also condemned in the strongest terms the attack and expressed its deep sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the people and Government of Somalia and the Republic of Kenya.

The 15-member body underscored its full support for AMISOM in delivering their mandate to reduce the threat posed by the terrorist group Al Shabaab and armed opposition groups in Somalia.

The council also underscored their gratitude for the bravery and sacrifices of AMISOM personnel in carrying out their mandate.

AMISOM is a peace keeping mission operated by the AU in Somalia with approval by the UN. Enditem
