1st LD Writethru: Sierra Leone reports new Ebola case

Xinhua, January 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Sierra Leone's Health Ministry confirmed Friday the country reported a new Ebola case, hours after the World Health Organization declared an end to the disease in West Africa.

A 22-year-old lady student contacted the disease in Bamoi, Lumor, a marketing community close to Guinea border, in the Kambia district and was taken to Magburaka in the Tonkolili district for treatment where she later died, said Abdulai Baraytay, spokesman of the ministry.

Baraytay said her swab was examined and proved positive of Ebola.

Langoba Keili, an official with the Office of National Security, told Xinhua that there was no need for alarm as the Emergency Operation Center is now on the ground to investigate the issue.

The level of preparedness is in place and there are enough resources to contain any resurgence of the disease, Keli said.

"Immediately family members have been isolated for proper screening," he said that all the isolation and treatment centers are in place, and "we did not stand anything down".

The health authorities have reminded the population that it does not mean there cannot be a resurgence of the disease, adding that people should continue to observe health instructions.

Sierra Leone was declared Ebola free by the WHO on November 7. Endit
