Cote d'Ivoire will maintain "drastic" vigilance measures against Ebola despite Thursday's announcement of the end of the epidemic in the West African sub-region by the World Health Organization (WHO), the country's health authorities have said.
"The government has decided to maintain preventive measures against Ebola virus while awaiting the 90 days marking the end of the disease," the director for National Institute for Public Hygiene Simplice Dagnan said.
Dagnan said the decision responds to the desire to protect the people's health and capitalize on the gains made in reinforcing Cote d'Ivoire's health system.
"The 90-day reinforced vigilance period will end on March 29, 2016," he said.
Cote d'Ivoire's authorities took drastic measures in early 2014 when the Ebola epidemic broke out in West Africa, to prevent the spread of the disease on national territory.
The measures included a ban on consumption of bush meat and health surveillance at the country's borders and at Abidjan airport.
On Thursday morning, WHO officially announced the end of the Ebola epidemic in West Africa where the disease claimed over 10,000 lives. Enditem
