Cambodia's new election committee selects current secretary-general for new term

Xinhua, January 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

The leaders of Cambodia's new National Election Committee (NEC) on Friday selected NEC's long-serving secretary-general Tep Nytha as the committee's secretary-general for a new term, NEC Chairman Sik Bunhok said.

"This morning, NEC's nine members decided to choose Tep Nytha as the secretary-general in charge of administration and finance in the new (five-year) term," he told reporters after a selection session.

He added that the NEC also selected four candidates as the NEC's deputy secretaries-general.

Tep Nytha, 61, who has held the post since 2002, defeated two other finalists - Heng Monychenda, director of NGO-Buddhism for Development, and Ya Navuth, executive director of NGO - Coordination of Action Research on AIDS and Mobility - for the position.

The selection was made eight months after the new NEC was established under a political truce between the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) and the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP).

The NEC's nine members included four each from the CPP and the CNRP, and one "neutral" person from civil society. Enditem
