A splendid light festival kicked off in several locations in London Thursday evening, turning the city into a colorful and fantastic world.

The new event, Lumiere London, developed by creative producers Artichoke and supported by the Mayor of London, will run from Thursday night to Sunday night.

It is free for the public to visit the spectacular light show on the streets and buildings on winter days.

The festival includes 30 artworks in central London, mainly located in four areas, including King's Cross; Mayfair and Grosvenor Square; Piccadilly, Regent Street, Leicester Square and St James's; and Trafalgar Square and Westminster. Parts of the streets have been closed so that Londoners and tourists can visit those places.

"Lumiere London is going to transform the capital in spectacular style. In one of the quietest periods of the year, artists from around the world are creating a stunning festival of light that will give Londoners and tourists alike another great reason to head into central London," said London Mayor Boris Johnson.
