UNEP says one staff member was injured in Jakarta attacks

Xinhua, January 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) said on Thursday that one of its staff members was seriously injured during Thursday's terrorist attacks in the vicinity of the UN offices in central Jakarta.

In a statement, UNEP said that the injured staff member is a Dutch national and a father of four children. He is also a renowned expert in forestry and ecosystems management, who was stationed in Jakarta as part of the UN team that provides support to the Indonesian government in combating peat-land fires.

"UNEP condemns in the strongest possible terms these senseless acts of terror. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families, including our UNEP colleague, who is currently fighting for his life, and the people and Government of Indonesia," said UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the UNEP Achim Steiner.

Seven people, including two suicide bombers, were killed and several others were injured in the suicide blasts in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, on Thursday morning. Endit
