Tokyo stocks plunge in morning as equities rout triggers sell off

Xinhua, January 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Tokyo stocks plunged in Thursday morning trading with the benchmark Nikkei Stock index sinking 4 percent at one point as a poor showing on Wall Street overnight, concerns about a slowdown in China's economy and ongoing geopolitical concerns contributed to a dire market mood.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average plunged 647.55 points, or 3.66 percent, from Wednesday to 17,068.08 by the break.

The Nikkei hit an intraday low of 17,004.12, marking its level lowest since the end of September.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, tumbled 50.56 points, or 3.51 percent, to 1,391.53.

All main section categories retreated, with mining, pharmaceuticals and wholesale trade issues comprising the biggest decliners. Endit
