The airport in Denmark's capital city broke its passenger record in 2015 with approximately 1 million more travelers than the previous year, the airport announced on Wednesday.
The number of passengers at Copenhagen Airport last year grew 3.8 percent year-on-year to 26.6 million, the airport said in a statement.
According to the airport's CEO Thomas Woldbye, the strong growth is backed by increasing passenger numbers on long-haul routes.
"The number of long-haul routes into and out of Copenhagen has doubled in the past decade, and last year alone we added five new intercontinental destinations to our route map," Woldbye said.
In December, passengers on long-haul routes increased 15.2 percent from a year ago, which is significantly above the average growth rate.
For a number of years, Copenhagen Airport has been working to increase the number of passengers traveling to Denmark, and indeed seven in ten of the new passengers in 2015 were tourists and business travelers visiting Denmark, it said.
During the year, the airport expanded the pier used for long-haul intercontinental routes to accommodate the growth and enlarged the runway.
European traffic at the airport increased by 4.4 percent in 2015, but domestic traffic was down by 2.9 percent, mainly as a result of a decline in the spring.
The top destination in 2015 was London with 2,231,792 passengers traveling to and from the UK, followed by Stockholm and Oslo. Endit
