President Rousseff encourages Brazilian women to report rapes, domestic violence

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff on Tuesday encouraged Brazilian women to report cases of rapes, sexual assaults and domestic violence.

The Brazilian society needs to "advance" and "end the culture of violence", the president said on a Twitter post.

She told Brazilian women to call the official hotline to report aggressions against them. The hotline was set up to curb the social problem in a country where most cases of rape and domestic violence are believed to remain unreported.

The president wrote the Twitter post after the Education Ministry released information in the day, revealing that at least 55 students had told personal stories of domestic violence or sexual assault in their essays in last year's college entrance examination.

"The essays introduced a moment of reflection not only for students but the society as a whole," Rousseff said in a series of following tweets. "Increased awareness about violence against women helps fight violence." Endi
