1st LD-Writethru: Chinese stocks finish slightly higher Tuesday

Xinhua, January 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

Chinese stocks closed slightly on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index gaining 0.2 percent to close at 3,022.86 points. The smaller Shenzhen index grew 0.8 percent to close at 10,293.7 points.

The ChiNext Index, the NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, climbed 1.95 percent to close at 2,147.53 points.

Total turnover on the two bourses stood at 550.7 billion yuan (83.9 billion U.S. dollars).

Gainers outnumbered losers by 556 to 419 in Shanghai and 953 to 590 in Shenzhen.

Financial firms, hotels and medical instruments led the gains.

Citic Securities rose by 1.34 percent to close at 15.89 yuan. Shanghai Pudong Development Bank gained 2.53 percent to finish at 17.45 yuan.

Steel, coal and non-ferrous metal shares led the decline.

Beijing Shougang, one of China's largest steel companies, declined by 7.64 percent and closed at 4.11 yuan.

Datong Coal Industry declined by 3.82 percent and finished at 5.79 yuan.

Stocks bounced from Monday's heavy losses, as investor confidence was rekindled with the strengthening of the offshore yuan, easing concerns over capital outflow.

Chinese shares experienced heavy losses Monday, with the Shanghai index declining by 5.33 percent at closing. The fluctuation of the exchange rate was partly to blame, according to a report from investment bank CICC.

Market sentiment was also boosted as the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) vowed Monday to further detect and mitigate financial risks in key areas in 2016. Endit
