Tokyo shares open lower on weak Shanghai market

Tokyo shares opened the trading Tuesday sharply lower on weak performances in China's Shanghai stocks market in the previous day.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 272.46 points, or 1.54 percent, from Friday to 17,425.50, the loss marked the Nikkei's sixth straight day of decline to start the new year.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 20.34 points, or 1.41 percent, to 1,426.98.

The Tokyo stocks markets were closed Monday for a national holiday. Enditem
