2 Turkish servicemen killed in operation against PKK

Xinhua, January 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

A Turkish soldier and an police officer were killed on Sunday during a military operation against the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) in southeastern Turkey, local Daily News reported.

A group of PKK militants opened fire on the Turkish security forces as the military operations were going on in six neighborhoods of Sur town of Diyarbakir province, according to the report.

Four Turkish soldiers and a police officer were severely wounded in the clash, and one of the injured soldiers and the police officer died in hospital.

Separately, PKK rebels executed three men in Hazreti Huseyin Mosque in Silopi town of Sirnak province in southeastern Turkey five days ago, local Sabah Daily reported on Sunday.

A total of 448 PKK militants have been killed in counter-terrorism operations in southeastern Turkey since Dec. 15, the Turkish Armed Forces said on Sunday.

The PKK negotiated a cease-fire with Ankara in 2013, but the truce fell apart in the wake of a suicide bomb attack on July 20, 2015, in the border town of Suruc in the southeastern province of Sanliurfa, in which 34 pro-Kurdish and left-wing activists were killed.

Tension has been running high since then, especially in southeastern Turkey. Endit
