13 killed in operations against PKK in eastern Turkey

Xinhua, January 10, 2016 Adjust font size:

A Turkish police officer was killed and two others wounded during an anti-terror operation against the the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) in eastern Van province on early Sunday, where 12 PKK rebels were killed, local Sabah Daily reported.

The Turkish police launched an operation upon finding out that the PKK members broke into a house across Van-Edremit highway, according to the report.

Special Operation teams also participated in the operation and killed 12 PKK rebels, said the report.

The policemen who were injured during the operations were taken to nearby hospital to receive treatment.

A statement issued by the Turkish Armed Forces said on Saturday a total of 307 PKK militants have been killed in counter-terrorism operations in Sirnak province and Diyarbakir province in southeastern Turkey since Dec. 15.

The PKK negotiated a cease-fire with Ankara in 2013, but the truce fell apart in the wake of a suicide bomb attack on July 20, 2015, in the border town of Suruc in the southeastern province of Sanliurfa. Some 34 pro-Kurdish and left-wing activists were killed.

Tension has been running high since then, especially in southeastern Turkey.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States. Endite
