1st LD: At least 2 foreign tourists injured in Egypt's Hurghada hotel attack

Xinhua, January 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

Three gunmen stormed a hotel in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Hurghada on Friday, injuring at least 2 foreign tourists, state-run news agency Ahram-online reported.

According to the report, the attack took place at Bella Vista Hotel in the downtown area of the city.

The Ahram-online quoted Khaled Megahed, a Health Ministry spokesperson, as saying that two Swedish tourists were injured in the attack and are being treated in a nearby hospital.

However, security sources said that the tourists, one Danish and one German, were injured in the attack.

According to eyewitnesses, two of the three gunmen were killed by security forces.

The attack came hours after Egyptian affiliate of Islamic State claimed responsibility for an armed attack on a tourist hotel in Cairo.

Egypt has witnessed a growing wave of anti-security attacks in revenge for the crackdown on Islamists after the army-led ouster of President Mohamed Morsi in 2013. Endit
