One man killed by heavy rain, floods in Israel

Xinhua, January 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

Torrential rains hit Israel on Friday, causing floods that killed a man in the country's north, officials said.

The storm began on Friday morning, moving from north to south, while haze was settling over central and southern Israel.

An emergency medical service in the north said that a man in his 40s died after being caught in a flood.

The man and his friend were riding an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) in the Yizrael Valley when a flood turned over their vehicle. The two were drifted away, one managed to rescue himself while the other was found dead some 500 meters away.

The Meteorological Service said that 100 mm of rainfall were measured in the morning in the Galilee city of Nazareth, an amount equal to one-fifth of the average precipitations of an entire year.

The Meteorological Service added that the storm is expected to strengthen later in the day, with hailstones and strong winds, before it will subside on Sunday. Enditem
