The European Commission said on Thursday it had adopted a series of cross-border cooperation programs totaling 1 billion euros (1.09 billion U.S. dollars) in order to support sustainable development in the regions on both sides of the EU's external borders.
"Cross-border cooperation plays a key role in avoiding the creation of new dividing lines. This new funding will further contribute to a more integrated and sustainable regional development in the neighboring border regions and to a more harmonious territorial cooperation on EU's external borders," said commissioner for European neighborhood policy and enlargement negotiations Johannes Hahn.
For each of the programs, the participating countries have selected up to four priorities, such as developing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), culture, environment and climate change, eradicating poverty, education and research, energy, accessibility, border management.
The funding comes under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the European Neighborhood Instrument (ENI). Financing agreements will be finalized between the partner countries and the EU by the end of 2016. Endit
