Burkina Faso's transition leaders urged to declare their wealth

Burkina Faso's National Network for Fighting Against Corruption (REN-LAC), a local NGO, has demanded that transition leaders whose mandate has come to an end should declare their wealth.
"We want the transition leaders as well as the current leaders to publicly declare their wealth," REN-LAC's executive secretary Dr. Claude Wetta said in a statement.
Wetta recalled that the new President Roch Marc Christian Kabore had committed to promote democracy and good governance.
"It is through such acts that we shall judge him. We believe there are many economic crimes that have been committed and they must be addressed," he said.
On Thursday, President Kabore named economist Paul Kaba Thieba as Prime Minister of the country, one week after being sworn in following his election in November.
Estimates from the World Bank show that Burkina Faso loses approximately 1 billion U.S. dollars annually due to corruption, yet the country is still ranked among the poorest in the world.
Over half of Burkina Faso's 18 million people live on less than 1 U.S. dollar per day.
Surveys carried out in the last five years have revealed that most Burkinabes believe corruption in the country has increased by close to 90 percent. Endit
